Everyone who is sexually active should be tested for STDs at least once. The testing schedule depends on your age, sexual history, and if you are pregnant. Many STDs and STIs can be treated with antibiotics or antiviral drugs. Some of these are one-time treatments, and others can be chronic or long-term therapies.

Left untreated, STDs and STIs can lead to infertility, birth defects, chronic pain, or neurological damage. Early testing and treatment are key to preventing health complications associated with STDs.

While sex can cause a urinary tract infection (UTI), a UTI is not a sexually transmitted disease or infection. Most UTIs are caused by a bacterial infection that can be treated with an antibiotic. An STD can be caused by either a bacterium or virus, but infections almost always involve sexual activity. The best way to know if you have a UTI or STD is to talk with a healthcare provider about your symptoms. They can answer your questions and provide guidance on any testing you may need to determine your diagnosis.

Depending on the infection, symptoms typically improve within a few days or up to two weeks after treatment.

There is little to no evidence showing that most STDs can go away on their own without treatment. Some infection symptoms can go away for periods of time, but frequently reappear at later times, often worse than before. Luckily, treatments are available for nearly every STI, and many can be fully cured.

Your risk for getting an STD is higher if you have unprotected sex, have new or multiple sex partners, or use barrier methods such as condoms inconsistently.

Practicing safe sex, which can include barrier methods such as condoms, can reduce the risk of acquiring or transmitting STDs. Vaccines can also help prevent certain STDs.The CDC recommends that sexually active women under the age of 25 get tested every year for gonorrhea and chlamydia. Annual testing is also recommended for women over 25 who have been sexually active with a new partner or with a partner who has an STD. Men who are sexually active with other men should get tested every year for common STDs such as syphilis, chlamydia, and gonorrhea, and HIV testing should occur more frequently such as every 3-6 months.

Some STDs show up on tests within a few days of exposure, while others can take up to three months. If you get tested for an STD immediately after possible exposure, the test may not be able to detect the STD because it takes time for your body’s immune system to respond to infections. If you believe that you have an STD or STI, it's helpful to ask a healthcare provider how long they recommend waiting before getting tested. Your clinician will review your medical history and symptoms during your visit and together, you can evaluate treatment options and make a plan that is right for you.

A telehealth visit may be right for you if you have been exposed to an STD or have mild symptoms such as:

• Pain or burning when urinating

• Pelvic pain

• Pain during sex

• Itching, redness, or sores around the genitals or mouth (genital warts)

• Unusual discharge from the penis or vagina

• Abnormal vaginal odor

However, a Virtual Care Visit may not be right for you if you have severe symptoms that may indicate a more serious infection. In-person care is recommended if you:

• Are pregnant

• Have a compromised immune system (HIV, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, cancer, transplant, etc.)

• Are experiencing flu-like symptoms (fever greater than 100.4°F or 38°C lasting more than two days, chills, feeling very tired, etc.)

STI consults (within 2 hours) are currently available in the following states: AL, AZ, CA, CO, CT, DE, FL, GA, IL, ID IA, KS, KY, ME, MD, MI, MN, MT, NE, NJ, NV, NH, NY, NM, NC, ND, OH, OK, OR, RI, SD, TN, TX, UT, VT, VA, WA, WI, WY. All other states are able to schedule future appointments with a clinician at a date and time of their choosing.

Given the immediacy of an on-demand appointment, health insurance processing may not be completed prior to your appointment, and you will likely be notified of your insurance coverage after your consultation. If coverage is insufficient you will be responsible for paying the cash price of up to $79.

Your Virtual Care Visit will include a 20 to 30 minute comprehensive video call with a licensed board-certified nurse practitioner — all from the comfort of your own home. Your provider will ask questions to learn about your medical history, symptoms, health concerns, and goals. They will work with you to create an actionable, personalized care plan that may include lab testing, STD screening, one-time prescriptions, and lifestyle recommendations.

Be open and honest with your healthcare provider when sharing details about your sexual history, and be ready to provide the following details during your visit:

• If you’ve been sexually active in the last year

• Whether you have sex with men, women, or both

• How many sexual partners you’ve had in the past 12 months

• If you have anal, oral, or vaginal sex

• Which measures you have taken to protect yourself from STDs

At this time, Virtual Care Visits are for patients aged 18 and above.

Your licensed board-certified nurse practitioners are qualified to prescribe medication, order lab tests, and assess your symptoms and health goals to create a customized care plan for you.

For scheduled visits, we’ll show you the providers who have availability and are licensed in your state. On-demand consults will be scheduled with the first available provider that is licensed in your state.

Many major insurance plans are accepted. To confirm if your specific plan is accepted, schedule your visit and enter your insurance information to have a payer eligibility check conducted. Before your scheduled appointment, you will receive an email from our partner, OpenLoop, with more details about your estimated costs and insurance eligibility.

Please note: We do not accept Medicare Part B or Medicaid. However, we do accept Medicare Advantage.

At this time, Everlywell tests are not covered by insurance. Everlywell tests are at-home lab tests that do not require an office visit. Everlywell tests are typically priced lower than out-of-pocket costs associated with such visits and in-person tests. Alternatively, recommended lab tests may be covered by your insurance plan but may require visiting a lab in-person to collect your sample. Please contact your insurance carrier to confirm.

The Virtual Care Visit is all about you. That means you help set the focus of the visit. If you have lab results you’d like to walk through, please have them ready to share with your clinician. Note that in the event you share older test results, your provider may recommend updated testing, but this may still provide a great starting point for a meaningful discussion.

If any follow-up care is advised, a certified medical assistant will schedule a follow-up appointment for you. You can speak to the same provider, based on provider availability. Please note that any follow-up appointments are considered separate from the initial appointment and will come at an additional cost.
